One of the Top universities of India

Anna University, formerly known as Porringer Anna University of technology (PAUT), is a technical university in Tamil Nadu, India. It’s been ranked 6th best university in India. The university encompasses within it one of the oldest technical institutes in the world and has a history spanning 220 years, including 2014. It was located in Chennai, Guindy. It was rechristened as ‘Anna University’ in 2001, absorbing about 250 engineering colleges.

Between 2007 and 2010, it was split into six universities namely:-

(1) Anna University, Chennai
(2) Anna University, Chennai-Regional Office, Tiruchirapalli
(3) Anna University,Chennai-Regional Office, Coimbatore
(4) Anna University, Chennai-Regional Office, Tirunelveli
(5) Anna University, Chennai-Regional Office,Madurai

On September 14, 2011, a bill was passed to merge back the universities. It once again became a single affliating university for engineering colleges all over Tamil Nadu from August1, 2012. The university departments include College of Engineering, Guindy Campus, Madurai Institute of Technology- Chromepet Campus, ACT campus and SAP campus.

Removal of CET (Common Entrance Test)

The common entrance test, conducted over the years by Anna University in the name of the Tamil Nadu Professional Courses Entrance Examination (TNPCEE), for admission to professional courses in the state was abolished in 2006. In the academic year of 2007-08, students were admitted to engineering colleges on the basis of their class 12 marks and their caste. This proved to be a big boon for all the aspiring engineering students and they welcomed this decision with open arms.

The reason stated for the abolition of the CET is that it provides urban students an advantage over rural students and causes significant expense burden on poor and rural students. This has resulted substantially greater percentage of students from rural/poor backgrounds in obtaining admission to institutions of excellence predominately in urban areas. But it has also increased the burden of the teaching staff in such institutions to bring such students up to par with their urban peers and led to perceptible downfall in their placement percentages over the years.

ISRO gave permission to Anna University to start a separate TV channel by providing equipment. The university has established Tamil Nadu’s first Interactive Satellite Terminal under the KU band of EDUSAT and identified as one of the channel partners in the southern region for EDUSAI live interactive Audio-Video lecture programs are transmitted through KU band and it helps to conduct free examinations in all its affiliated colleges.

The university’s main campus is situated in the southern part of Chennai and extends over 185 acres later extended by taramani campus which is about 38.6 acres. The third campus of the university is located at Taramani near the Instronic campus, Adyar.

ANUSAT

Anna University Microsatellite or ANUSAT is an Indian student built micro satellite. ANUSAT is the first satellite designed and developed by an Indian University and is the first satellite in India to be built and operated by any oraganisation other than ISRO.
So all the wannabe engineers, please pay attention, and score well in your boards to gain entry into this top university.
